According to various stories that are connected with Lord Krishna, Indra- the King of deities, who was egoistic, yet worshiped by the people of Brij, where Krishna used to reside when he was a kid and of course Mountain Govardhana.
According to Puranas - Indian Mythology, Krishna once asked his mother, "Maa, why do we worship Indra?" to which his mother Yashoda replied, "Son, Indra is the King of Deities and we worship him because it rains with his grace and we all prosper, our cows eat because of him and if we don't worship him, he will curse us."
To this, Krishna replied, "Maa, worship is not done because of fear and it is done because of love only. we should worship Govardhana Mountain, whom we love, It is govardhana that gives us everything that we need."
According to the story, that year, Krishna persuaded every Brijwasi to worship Govardhana instead of deity Indra and they all did the same following Krishna's advice.
Seeing this, Angry and Egoistic Indra created flood like situation in Braj and then Lord Krishna saved every resident of Braj along with cattle and other living beings by holding Goverdhana Mountain on his little finger.
Later, Indra realized his mistake and sought Lord Krishna's mercy. This mythical story has many meanings, this shows egoistic attitude is bound to go in front of love.
